WEST CAPITOL AVENUE

West and East Capitol Avenue are mirrors of each other. The reflecting surface that images Sacramento is the line and plane that runs down the center of the Sacramento River. The exact center of the Sacramento River (if the exact center acdtually exists!) is the legal boundary between the two cities.

In the 19 Century, stage coach passengers bathed in the Sacramento River before they boarded the horse-drawn coaches for the last leg into the big city of San Francisco.

It didn’t matter which side of the river they dried off after the cleansing bath. Both banks of the Sacramento, during the 19th Century, were full off Cottonwood trees, Yellow Billed Magpies, and the occasional gold nugget washed down accidentally from the sluice boxes along the American River stretching up into the legendary Mother Lode.
